GRAY ROCKIN'

GRAY ROCKIN' ~ We have a lovely porch and make a point to enjoy it as often as we can. Our neighbor across the street—an octogenarian—is out on his porch in all kinds of weather, faithfully rocking away.
I joked to my husband that the two of us were just “a couple of retired gray-hairs rockin’ on the porch.”
Then I discovered—much to my amusement—that there's an actual psychological strategy called the gray rock method (or gray rocking technique). It has nothing to do with leisurely porch-sitting or silver hair, though!
The gray rock method is a deliberate tactic for dealing with manipulative, toxic, narcissistic, or abusive people (especially when you can't fully cut contact). The core idea is to make yourself as dull, uninteresting, and emotionally flat as a plain gray rock. By giving minimal responses, staying neutral, sharing nothing personal, and showing zero drama or strong feelings, you starve the other person of the attention, reactions, or "narcissistic supply" they seek. Often, they lose interest and back off.
It's a protective boundary tool—not a punishment or long-term lifestyle—but a way to stay safe and disengaged in tough interactions. (Quite the contrast to the peaceful, engaging kind of "rocking" we do on the porch!)
