The first of my BANNED BOOKS collection is THE SNOWY DAY.  This colorway was inspired by the cover of the book.  Oranges of the building, pinks and greens of the dirty snow, and Peter's bright, red snowsuit are highlighted in the skein as well as the grays of his foot-prints.   A silver-plated pewter snowman progress keeper will accompany the first 15 orders (one per order). This colorway is only dyed on lace, fingering, and DK weight.

Written in 1962 by Ezra Jack Keats, the story's main character, Peter, was the first black child protagonist in children's literature.   A child's wonder unfolds at the possibility of the first snowfall of the year.  However, "in the 1960s, the children’s publishing world was steeped in the thought of the day, that black people in general, and black children in particular, were inferior to white people."(1)  People were outraged because some thought Keats represented black people in a negative way.  Others said he couldn't write about a black character because he wasn't black.   More controversy happened the next year because some folks thought Keats created the story just so he could get the Caldecott Medal.  The book won the Caldecott Medal in 1963 for "the most distinguished American picture book for children”. You can read the author's acceptance speech here.

If you've never read THE SNOWY DAY, or you'd just like a refresher, you may watch this illustrated 4 minute video.

When THE SNOWY DAY turned 50 in 2012, NPR's segment, All Things Considered, ran a story regarding breaking color barriers.

Washing instructions:
For best results, handknit items should be handwashed in tepid water and laid flat to dry. Superwash yarn CAN be washed in the machine on a gentle cycle (but not advised), then laid flat to dry.

Yarn dyeing is done at home in my back room and air-dried by God. We are a non-smoking home with a cat that roams around our back room and yard. He is afraid of the dyeing equipment and special care is taken so that he does not get onto the yarn - he's too old and arthritic to jump up on the table anyway.

Due to the nature of hand-dyed yarns being unique, the skein you receive may vary slightly from the photo shown. If you have questions about the skein, please contact me and I will answer any questions you may have.
